Personal Rant #3,896: Environmental Extremists Hurt the Planet and Make Life Difficult on Real Activists

Here is an email I wrote to an enviro-wacko from a real activist (me) that works in the field and not from the comfort of his own little studio. He had claimed that all hunters are, basically, evil:

Not that bright?

On the official HAARP site there is a Q&A section in which it was said that the artificial aurora produced during HAARP experiments is negligable. In this paper submitted to the Second World Space Congress held in 2002, another story seems to emerge. Excerpts are from an abstract at the Smithsonian NASA/ADS Astronomy Abstract Service.

Yellowstone Bison Slaughter a Sham

Once again the state of Montana, along with Yellowstone National Park, are killing bison migrating out of Yellowstone National Park. The slaughter of Yellowstone’s bison is represented as a disease contamination program, but it is really a sham. If disease control were the issue, we wouldn’t be killing bison. The more you know about the brucellosis-bison issue, the angrier you get.

We Ought Not Grow Cows In Dry West

It has been estimated that if all of the ranching that exists from the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains to the west coast of the United States was eliminated that only two percent of the national beef production would be affected. This is because of the nature of the landscape in the west of America where it takes about fifty times the amount of land to raise one cow as it does in the biomass-rich east. Given how much more delicate the countryside is in the region, it makes little sense to put cows all over and make the entire west into what Edward Abbey called "cow burnt." In case you are wondering: no, bison do not have nearly the effect that cattle do. Hoof shape and the migratory instinct lessen such impact.

Bewilderness

John Moore: In an important article, Jay Vest convincingly demonstrates that the words "will" and "wild" derive from a common etymological root. For primal Europeans, nature was pervaded by a will force that remained beyond their power to influence. What nature autonomously willed became identified as wild.

Schumann’s Resonances and Vision 2020

The rhythm of life has evolved at an even tempo for epochs. We live in a complex matrix of oscillating fields; the tiniest fluctuations in one interlocked field carry over perturbations into others. Many times per second, pulses travel completely around the world between our planet's surface and the ionosphere sending coordinating signals to all organisms. These signals couple us to the global electrostatic field. Named for their discoverer, the Schumann Resonance (SR) provides an orchestrating pulse for life on our planet.

Dispelling the Cowboy Myth

Open space isn't necessarily good for wildlife or ecosystem protection. If that were the case, then Montana would not have any endangered species. There would be bison, wolves, grizzlies and sage grouse everywhere—but these species are on the verge of extinction. Why? Because of sprawl? Hardly. Because of agriculture—primarily livestock production.

Sacred Buffalo, Holy Cow: The Struggle for the Western Range

This piece was first published online at the Buffalo Field Campaign's old website which was, in turn, hosted by the Alliance for the Wild Rockies. Although it is now eight years old, it remains a thorough synopsis of the history of the slaughter of the buffalo and the deliberate genocide of first nations' peoples. For more recent information on this issue, see the Buffalo Field Campaign's current website.

Yellowstone Buffalo Slaughter History

More wild buffalo have been slaughtered in America in the past ten years than at any time in the last century. Capitalizing on the Indian's complete dependence upon the buffalo, 19th century government leaders launched a campaign to wipe them out, and in so doing, force the Indians into a sedentary lifestyle more in line with the prevailing European notions of private property and "civilization."

British Columbia: Ancient Trees Emerge from Ice

The mound of data that is already mountainous in proportions grows even higher; I speak, of course, of the evidence that what is happening to the atmosphere on Earth is unprecedented. Like most of it, it is unambiguous. See On Global Warming: A Challenge to Skeptics.

New Document Reveals HAARP's Mystery's Powers

Of course, always caveat lector when dealing with Wired Magazine. While they do a pretty good job of coming up with some of the more attention-grabbing headlines, they are rumored to have an inordinately high concentration of ex-NSA employees working on their staff. This particular piece posits that HAARP is not an anti-missile technology, nor a weather modification instrument nor, are we to believe, is it a communications exponentiator.

The Suppressed Ideas of Kropotkin on Evolution

In his book, Bully for Brontosaurus, scientific historian Stephen Jay Gould devotes a chapter to presenting Peter Kropotkin's views on biological evolution. Kropotkin is best known as a Russian revolutionary anarchist who believed in cooperative, rather than hierarchical and competitive, human relationships, and in devolving the power of the central state to local communities. It is less well known that his political views were based on a sophisticated view of evolution.

Weather Modification

Former national security advisor to Jimmy Carter, Zbigniew Brzezinski, in 1970: "Technology will make available, to the leaders of major nations, techniques for conducting secret warfare of which only a bare minimum of the security forces need be appraised…Technology of weather modification could be employed to produce prolonged periods of drought or storm."

September 26, 1983 -- Stanislav Petrov Saves the World

Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov is a retired Russian Strategic Rocket Forces lieutenant colonel who, on September 26, 1983, prevented a nuclear attack on the United States. Computer reports into the Strategic Rocket Forces command from their satellites indicated incoming U.S. nuclear missiles. Petrov made the decision to call it a false alarm, when all indications were that it was an impending nuclear attack. The computer reports were later confirmed to have been in error. Because of military secrecy and international policy, Petrov's actions were kept secret until 1998.

On Global Warming: A Challenge to Skeptics

To deny that humans are affecting the warming of the planet and exacerbating it is to deny that either A) the gases released by human industry trap heat or that B) human industry emits such gases. Either is easily proven. So, global warming deniers, which is it?

October Update on the Renewable Electricity Standard (RES)

I wanted to let you know what's going on with the Renewable Electricity Standard (RES) part of the aggressive "Energy Bill 2007" that my consortium and I are trying to into law. I have been focusing on CAFE Standards, 35 mpg by 2020, but there is also a renewable energy component that would increase the proportion of solar, wind, and others, to 15% by 2020.
